Skin Care is Essential During Menopause

Dr. Vanita Rattan, a global skin doctor and cosmetic formulator, highlights that our bodies lose moisture during perimenopause, leading to overall dryness, including the skin. "Post menopause, the skin becomes incredibly dry as you lose estrogen. Estrogen is a humectant, a water magnet, so you lose your water magnets," she explains.

This dryness can cause crow's feet and fine lines to become more noticeable. To combat this, Dr. Rattan shares two effective tips for maintaining skin hydration.

Tip 1: Lock in Moisture with Facial Oil and Slugging

To keep your skin hydrated, Dr. Rattan recommends using facial oil or practicing "slugging." After applying moisturizer, lock it in with a facial oil. Slugging involves applying a thick layer of an occlusive ointment, such as petroleum jelly, to the skin to help seal in moisture.

"Use petroleum jelly like Vaseline on the eye area and any other dry parts of your face," advises Dr. Rattan. "Sleep on your back to avoid transferring the product to your pillow."

Tip 2: Use a Humidifier

Central heating and air conditioning can further dry out the skin. Dr. Rattan suggests using a humidifier at night to add moisture to the air. This can help counteract the drying effects of indoor climate control.

"A humidifier, along with a moisturizer that contains glycerin, will help lock in moisture and bring it back into the skin," she says.

Additional Skin Care Tip: Wear SPF Daily

To protect your skin from daily aging signs, Dr. Rattan emphasizes the importance of wearing SPF every day. "The number one thing we say is wear SPF 50. This is very important because it protects you from UV rays," she states.

By incorporating these tips into your skincare routine, you can help reduce the appearance of crow's feet and fine lines, keeping your skin looking healthy and plump during and after menopause.
