Menopause's Impact on Female Horse Riders

In a survey of more than 1,600 riders, it was discovered that one in three female riders stop riding totally or temporarily when they hit the perimenopause and menopause.

The Impact of Menopause on Riders

Stephanie Bradley, a Level 4 UKCC dressage coach and saddle fitter, conducted the research that highlighted the significant impact of menopause on female riders. Her study, "Effects of the Perimenopause and Menopause on Female Riders," won first prize at the Alltech Hartpury Conference for its insightful findings and will be featured in a scientific journal.

Stephanie's research is part of her Master's degree at the University of Gloucester. It revealed that 68% of female riders experienced a negative impact on their motivation, and many reported a decline in confidence. Surprisingly, only 50% felt comfortable discussing their issues with a female coach.

Key Findings from the Research

  • Motivation and Confidence: 68% of riders reported a decrease in motivation, and many experienced lower confidence levels.

  • Communication: Only half of the participants felt able to discuss their menopause-related issues with a female coach.

  • Saddle Fitting: One in five riders indicated that menopause affected their experience with saddle fitting. Most reported discomfort with their saddle or increased anxiety about riding.

Stephanie expressed her excitement about winning first prize at the conference, emphasizing the importance of sharing academic research. "Thanks to all those who organized and sponsored the event which enables the valuable sharing of academic research," she said.

Menopause Symptoms and Riders

Menopause and perimenopause symptoms can include anxiety, mood changes (such as low mood and irritability), skin condition changes (including adult acne), insomnia, and feelings of loss of self-worth. Additionally, women may experience urinary incontinence, palpitations, and hot flushes.

Industry Impact and Support

Stephanie hopes that her research will help coaches and support teams raise awareness and better support riders through menopause. "For the trade and the wider industry, it will clearly have a positive impact if we can keep women in the saddle for longer," she noted.

Expert Advice on Coping with Menopause

In a recent episode of the podcast "Poles, Piaffe & Prosecco," minuet coach Jenni Winter-Leach of Flying Changes discussed the challenges riders face during menopause. She recommended that women experiencing symptoms should consult their doctors and acknowledge their symptoms to manage them effectively.
