Four Warning Signs Your 'Period Blood' Isn't Normal
Dr. Suraj Kukadia, also known as Dr. Sooj, has issued a stark warning about unusual vaginal bleeding which may be a sign of cancer in the worst cases. He's unveiled four crucial symptoms that signal it's time to see a GP.
It's easy to pass off the occasional spotting as nothing to worry about. But a doctor claims this is among four blaring red flags that something's amiss with your vagina. While you may think it's leftover period blood or just a minor scrape, Dr. Suraj Kukadia - or Dr. Sooj - strongly advises anyone experiencing this to see a GP.
"Do you know what abnormal vaginal bleeding means?" the NHS medic asked, taking to TikTok (@doctorsooj). "There are red flags and it means you need to go and get checked out by a doctor. Let's make sure that we're not missing something because generally, the earlier that we catch these things, the better the outcome."
Warning Signs of Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding
1. Postmenopausal Bleeding
First up, Dr. Sooj emphasized any kind of bleeding after menopause, including spotting or bloody discharge. Even if it's only happened once, you're unsure it's blood, or it doesn't have a 'typical' red color, showing up as brown or pink, this is still a bad sign. While ovarian and womb cancers are among the potential causes of postmenopausal bleeding, it can also be triggered by atrophic vaginitis - inflammation of the vaginal lining. This condition can cause your vagina to become incredibly sore and itchy, so getting the correct treatment is crucial.
2. Intermenstrual Bleeding
The second sign is bleeding in between your periods. Known as intermenstrual bleeding, this refers to any bleeding outside of your normal cycle. Importantly, hormonal contraceptives - such as the combined pill or contraceptive patch - can trigger irregular bleeding. However, if intermenstrual bleeding lasts longer than a few months, it may be a sign of chlamydia, fibroids, or cancer.
3. Painful or Heavy Bleeding
The third warning sign is any bleeding that is much more painful or heavier than normal for you. Unusually heavy periods can be a sign of various conditions affecting the womb, such as endometriosis. According to the NHS, this occurs where 'the tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes'.
4. Unusual Spotting
Lastly, any unusual spotting should not be ignored. This includes spotting that occurs at unexpected times, has an unusual color, or is accompanied by other symptoms like pain or discomfort.
When to See a Doctor
Dr. Sooj's message is clear: any abnormal vaginal bleeding should be checked by a doctor. Whether it's spotting post-menopause, bleeding between periods, painful or heavy bleeding, or unusual spotting, these symptoms could indicate serious underlying health issues. Early detection and treatment are crucial for better health outcomes.
