Embracing Motherhood After 40: The Benefits of Egg Freezing

As societal norms evolve, the question of the ideal age for motherhood remains a topic of debate. While women in their 40s can experience successful pregnancies, it's important to understand the health implications and the role of technological advancements in fertility.

The American Congress for Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states that women are most fertile between 18 and 30 years, with fertility declining after 30. By 40, the likelihood of natural pregnancy drops, and menopause typically begins around 50. These biological realities prompt consideration of alternatives for those planning late pregnancies.

The Role of Fertility Preservation

Fertility preservation is a significant technological breakthrough aiding women who wish to delay motherhood. Dr. Sunita Arora, an infertility expert at Fortis La Fame Hospital in Delhi, advocates for egg freezing as a viable option for women planning to become mothers after 40.

How Does Egg Freezing Work?

Egg freezing involves preserving a woman's eggs at a younger age, to be used later for conception. This method helps in overcoming the age-related decline in fertility and the increased risk of genetic issues in eggs as women age.

Timing is Key

Experts recommend freezing eggs before 40 for better pregnancy outcomes in the future. The risk of genetic disorders like Down’s syndrome in babies increases with maternal age. For instance, the probability of Down’s syndrome is 1 in 900 for a 30-year-old mother, but it increases to 1 in 100 by age 40. Freezing eggs between 30-35 provides a safer window for those considering motherhood around 40.
